Tall Wellies

A tall welly is the classic shape for a reason: knee-high protection keeps you dry through deep mud, wet grass and standing water, and stops your trousers taking the worst of it.

This is our largest range, which means the choice is less about finding a tall boot and more about picking the right one for the job.

  • Knee-high cover for deep mud and wet grass
  • Country soles built for walking, not just standing
  • Cotton, neoprene and leather linings

Choosing between a country boot and a fashion boot

A country boot such as an Aigle Parcours, a Le Chameau or a Grubs is built for walking. Expect a supportive sole with real tread, a heavier build and, usually, a lining that keeps the boot comfortable over a long day. If you are covering ground, this is what you want.

A fashion boot such as a Havaianas, an Evercreatures or a WedgeWelly is lighter, brighter and easier to live with in town. It will keep you dry at a festival or on the school run, but it is not the boot for eight miles across a hill.

Lining changes the boot more than the height does

A cotton lining is cool, light and fine for most of the year. Neoprene is warm, stretchy and forgiving on a wider calf, which makes it the sensible pick for winter and for anyone standing still in the cold. Leather sits at the top of the range and softens with wear.

If you are buying one pair to do everything in Britain, a neoprene-lined tall boot is usually the most versatile answer.

Common questions

How tall is a tall welly?

Most sit just below the knee, typically 36cm to 40cm from sole to top depending on the brand and your size. The individual product page lists the shaft height where the manufacturer publishes it.

Are tall wellies uncomfortable to walk in?

A well-made one is not. The difference is the sole and the lining rather than the height: a flat, unsupported sole is what makes a long walk hurt. Look at Aigle, Le Chameau or Muck Boot if you plan to walk any distance.

Will a tall boot fit my calf?

That is the usual sticking point, and it has nothing to do with your shoe size. Measure around the widest part of your calf over the socks you would wear, and look at our wide calf range if a standard boot has been tight before.
